Plenary Highlights

May 18, 2022 – Wednesday – The Tech That Comes Next: How Nonprofits Can Build an Equitable World

Amy Sample Ward and Afua Bruce are co-authors of the book The Tech that Comes Next: How Changemakers, Philanthropists and Technologists Can Build an Equitable World.

Who is part of technology development, who funds that development, and how we put technology to use all influence the outcomes that are possible. To change those outcomes, we must – all of us – shift our relationship to technology, how we use it, build it, fund it, and more. In The Tech That Comes Next, Amy Sample Ward and Afua Bruce – two leaders in equitable design and use of new technologies – invite you to join them in asking big questions and making change from wherever you are today.

May 19, 2022 – Thursday – No Going Back: New Demand to Lead & Design Racially Just & Loving Systems

LaShawn Routé Chatmon and Hugh Vasquez, leaders of the National Equity Project, will speak about “designing for a future where equity is at the root of all that we do.”

Nonprofits have always been about advancing the public good, but in reality, we haven’t always realized this aspiration. What is the role of nonprofits to help shape and drive our collective future? What does it mean to take responsibility to design for a future where equity is at the root of all that we do? We have a choice, perpetuate the status quo where inequities are maintained or dismantle the forces that cause inequities and create conditions for all of us to thrive. Join us and explore the current landscape we are in, what are we grappling with, what we can lean on to tether us to our aspirations, beliefs and values, and what we have to do now if we are not going to turn back but instead drive forward for social justice.

May 20, 2022 – Friday – Rise Together!

The leaders of Rise Together! will share lessons learned from a collaborative capital campaign to build affordable housing.

Listen in as seasoned leaders of six well-known King County nonprofits get real about the stresses and joys of working on Rise Together!, an ambitious $40 million collaborative capital campaign to build 400 new affordable homes in three Seattle-area neighborhoods alongside space for community programs, health and human services, and local minority-owned businesses. Over the past two years, Rise Together also had to weather the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic for each organization and all those whom they serve. The collaborative model of “rising together” that the group had developed over the years served them well in developing fresh strategies for uncertain times.
